Add this book to the list of things I would’ve never picked up in a bajillion years if I hadn’t found it on CBR. Add this to one of my favorite books ever. I thought I hated graphic novels. I thought I hated horror. I thought I hated creepy gothic stuff. Apparently not. Who even am I? I don’t know.
This book is just gorgeous. The illustrations are stunning and mysterious and creepy and terrifying. It’s like five little illustrated ghost stories. In “Our Neighbor’s House,” three girls wait for their dad to return from a mysterious trip into the woods, receiving instead a sinister nightly visitor. “A Lady’s Hands Are Cold” reads like a mashup of “The Yellow Wallpaper” and the “Crimson Peak.” A young woman is married off and sent to a creepy manor with creepy secrets hidden in the walls. “My Friend Janna” has a pair of friends – one of whom pretends she can see creepy things, and one of whom actually can. In “The Nesting Place,” a woman goes to live with her brother and his fiancée after their mother dies. Things (and people) are not what they seem. “His Face All Red” was apparently originally a webcomic. A guy’s brother is living his life, socializing and doing what he does, but how can that be when he’s dead? They’re all good, but that one was actually my least favorite and I wonder if it’s because it’s the only one without a female protagonist.
What else is there to say? It’s fantastic. You should read it if you like graphic stories, or horror. Or even if you don’t – I sure didn’t!
