Look, it’s hell, 40 ways! – Take your pick.

This book was a bit of an unexpected surprise. Also, it’s been over a month since I’ve finished it, so I apologize if I get a little hazy on the details.

This is a fiction book, with short 1-2 page stories detailing theories of what the afterlive could be. Some could be possible, most are just supposed to be entertaining. Although the author keeps mentioning God, it is not ever religious in any way shape or form – he is just naming whoever wouls have theoretically placed us in the world: a computer, microbes, aliens, dumber forms of life than us…

All in all, I mean mostly enjoyed it. It’s a short book, but I’d recommend taking your time reading it. Going through them too fast tends to have similar stories blurring together, especially towards the end of the book.  My favorite story was definitely the one called “Oz”, where after undergoing a great journey to prove your courage in order to meet God, you’re faced with the reality that there is no God, whereas the most terrifying version of hell trophy goes to “Subjunctive”, where you’re stuck with an eternity of being measured up againt all other possible versions of yourself, in a way that you cannot handle interacting with the more successful versions of you, as they just rub all your mistakes constantly in your face, nor with the less successful versions of you, as their stupidity does nothing but frustate you.

Still, I’d definitely recommend this. Although these are not an answer to the ever present question of what happens after death, it does provide you with valuable opportunities to reflect on your life.
