This is book six in the Extinction Cycle books. I read book five a few months ago, and then needed a little break from the bleak world of the Variants and the Juveniles and all the fighting. When I picked this book up (Kindle version natch), it took me a little while to get into it, for those very same reasons. Once I got going though, I couldn’t stop. I love the characters in this world. Also, Apollo is back. Once I saw he’d be fighting with a main character (Fitz), I clicked on X-ray on my Kindle to see all the times he popped up to make sure he lived through the end. ONCE AGAIN I am happy to say that the dog lives. Sorry if that’s a spoiler, but like I’ve said in the past, the dog’s fate is very important to me in a book, movie, or TV show.
If at all possible, this book is somehow bleaker than the earlier ones. The Juveniles are getting worse. Team Ghost is trying to help out Europe. Apparently the Europeans did a bad job deploying their monster-killing bioweapons, because there are a crap ton of Variants and Juveniles in Europe. Also, they’re apparently mutating. There are much more terrifying beasts than ever before. It feels a little hopeless because there’s so much for our heroes to fight against.
This of course is without even mentioning the jackass homegrown terrorists bent on destroying our little group and the President. I literally have no idea how they’re going to get out of it all, or even if they do. There is a book seven coming out later this year, so I’ll keep y’all posted!
