We’re Going to Need More Wine (And a Bucket to Hold My Tears from Laughing and Crying)

January 10, 2018 by Beth Ellen 1 Comment

I’ve loved Gabrielle Union since 10 Things I Hate About You. I was the perfect age when it came out, and my friends and I as teenagers rented it from Blockbuster over and over and over again. I’ve always had such a soft spot for her, and have been thrilled that she’s had steady work for most of her career.

I listened to this audiobook in less than 2 days. It’s sooooooo good. Everyone go get it. Gabrielle Union reads it. I’ll wait.

It’s Gabrielle Union telling stories about her life. And it’s fearless. She says at the start she named it We’re Going to Need More Wine, because she’s uncomfortable confronting so many of these stories. I totally understand why, but I think they’re incredible stories to tell. She openly talks about race growing up, her family, her sexual assault, working in Hollywood, being married to a famous athlete, and raising their African American sons.

She talks so openly it was a little terrifying to listen to. How could she be so brave? I sure as sh*t don’t have it in me to tell the world my stories. She confronts so many elephants and pops them one by one. She explicitly describes her rape. She explicitly discusses her fertility issues (and tells everyone to pretty much shove it, as she should!). She explicitly discusses raises stepsons vs being a biological mother. She explicitly tells her sons if they are ever stopped and questioned to immediately say, “I’m Dwyane Wade’s kid”. She explicitly discusses race in the context of her life and her experiences again and again and it leaves me in awe. She is not a perfect person, and the first to admit it. But what she is, is courageous and amazing and gosh if I ever met her I would probably just start sobbing about how much I love her.

Anywho, this is all to say everyone should listen. She’s tell her stories, and they are worth the time to give a listen. This is an audiobook that I will definitely come back to and listen again. That rarely happens, so you should all go enjoy.

This is on my list to read this year! I won’t manage the audiobook (I don’t have time to listen to anything anymore) but can grab a few minutes here and there to read. Looking forward to it (if I can say that about something which is obviously going to have parts that are very difficult to read).
