So Narfna reminded me that this series existed. I started the first one last year, but set it down X months ago. When she said the third made her swoon, I decided to skip ahead to see what all the fuss was about. Thankfully I joined right in.
Kate is the daughter of a disinherited earl’s son for marrying an actress. He now works as a barrister and is quite happy in his life, even though it’s not what it was expected to be. Nick is one of her father’s proteges, and has his own recent family issues from the previous book in the series. Nick tried to court Kate 3 years ago, but she shut him down quickly as she had aspirations of marrying up in the world. Since then they’ve become friends and allies of a sort trying to help each other to their own goals. I’m not usually a friends to lovers trope fan. It’s not my favorite even though it’s Mr. Beth Ellen’s and my reality. But she really pulled it off here, and I think a lot of that had to do with their fairly equivalent “class level”, and it not being the nobility for once.
Overall, it was lovely. Grant wrote a book full of well rounded, flawed people who were still likable. It was definitely a different sort of romance compared to all the light and fluffy ones out there (not that I’m complaining, I love a good Tessa Dare), but it was wonderful for characters actions to have real world consequences. And not just on themselves, but for their family and friends as well. I really enjoyed Grant’s writing style, and it definitely encourages me to go back and pick up the first one again.
This is all to say Narfna has great taste, I read a wonderful, solid romance, and now I’m just happy with the world for one brief moment.
Friends to lovers isn’t usually my thing either. But it works so well here! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
