Neither Character Is As Awful As I Thought They Were In the Last Book

May 17, 2018 by Melina Leave a Comment

Ahhh what glowing praise I’ve bestowed upon the characters in my title. hahaha.

I won’t be able to talk much about the plot of this book unless I was willing to talk about some major plot points from the second book because you might want to read that book.  I personally never want to read that book ever again as it destroyed two characters that I loved in the first book, A Study in Charlotte.  I disliked The Last of August so very much that I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue with the series but I am pretty glad that I did.  The Case for Jamie follows Jamie Watson for the majority of the book (yes, the chapters alternate between Jamie and Charlotte but Charlotte spends the majority of the book improving herself–emotionally, physically and in terms of addictions).  Jamie, meanwhile, is still struggling with the after effects of the previous two novels and suffers from PTSD which attempts to brush under the rug each time he experiences symptoms.  Where I was furious with both Jamie and Holmes in book 2, the author spends a lot of time mending all the damage done in that book here.  There is a mystery (who is attempting to frame Jamie and/or destroy his academic career?  Where is Lucien Moriarty and what will happen when Charlotte and he come face to face again?).  There is danger! (Lucien’s a bad guy and he has a grudge from the previous book). There is a partnership! (Charlotte and Jamie spend almost the entirety of the book apart, but when they do work together they are just as an amazing team as the original Watson and Holmes).

So yeah, this review won’t win awards but if you enjoyed A Study in Charlotte, I think you’ll like The Case for Jamie.  I am not 100% sure if the books will continue but if they do, I will continue to read them.

As a four time participant and the time Cannonball Read failure, I stand before you ready to kick ass, read books and somehow keep my children clean and sign their homework books daily (well that's never going to happen, so let's hope I can at least read 52 books this year). Teacher of 160 seniors, mom of 3 kids/ two dogs, and wife to one pretty great husband. I need a nap and some Calgon (substitute Calgon with rum) so that I can rinse and repeat this insanity on a daily basis. View Melina's reviews»
