There’s a Monster at the End of This Book

May 4, 2018 by Melina 1 Comment

Life is a balancing act.  We have to balance what we want to do with what we have to do. We have to balance our comfort with our risks.  Eliza Mirk has lived a mostly anonymous online life where she has created one of the most popular stories on the Internet.  Written and drawn in installments, Monstrous Sea pretty much consumes Eliza’s life.  When she is first introduced to a new student named Wallace, she thinks he’s just another jock who will make fun of her, later she learns that he writes Monstrous Sea fan fiction that is so good she can hardly even offer any advice when he allows her to read his chapters.  As her senior year winds down and Monstrous Sea is coming to its conclusion, Eliza feels the pressure of finality (who is she when the story is over?  What will her fans think of her ending? What if she can’t nail the ending, will it ruin the whole thing?) and has difficulty dealing with it all.

I ran out of books to read so I came back here to the website and clicked on five star reviews.  When I read the review for this book it stood out to me.  And wow. I do have to thank Narfna for her far better review of this book because it was her words that drew me to the book. It’s a YA book for sure but for anyone who writes, draws, creates art of any kind, it really brings the feelings that come about when you’ve created something, something you love and both want to share and don’t want to share with the world.  I even feel like this applies to motherhood too…I love my little people so much and sometimes I wish I didn’t have to give them to the world because they are just so perfect to me.  Well now that I’ve gone on that tangent, I have to reroute myself.  Do yourself a favor and read this book, it’s a treasure.

As a four time participant and the time Cannonball Read failure, I stand before you ready to kick ass, read books and somehow keep my children clean and sign their homework books daily (well that's never going to happen, so let's hope I can at least read 52 books this year). Teacher of 160 seniors, mom of 3 kids/ two dogs, and wife to one pretty great husband. I need a nap and some Calgon (substitute Calgon with rum) so that I can rinse and repeat this insanity on a daily basis. View Melina's reviews»
