A simple, sweet and special story about school.

September 8, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Hello School! It is our little narrators first day of school. They are nervous, excited and know they will have fun and learn ever so much. Readers will experience what a first day of school can be like. Priscilla Burris (author and illustrator) has made a simple, sweet and special story about school.

The illustrations are not completely realistic, but they are realistic, too. The students have expressions that are obvious to understand just by looking at them. She does not have to tell us that “Kevin” is happy or “Melinda” sad. There are a multi-cultural mixture of boys and girls as well as their teacher. Easy text that is not very long will have the child able to sit and enjoy listening/being read too and the slightly older reader able to read on their own. Or, perhaps can read with a little help from an adult.

If your child is starting school for the first time or perhaps a new school even, this would be a good book for them. Overall, however, I did not find anything new with this book. The illustrations showing different looking students without going to extremes (all children are able body and not special needs in any form). They are also not overly detailed, so the younger reader/listener is not overwhelmed but too much stimulation. Also, they are perfectly bright and bold. They are not overpowering to the point you are blinded by color. Everything is soft, but had the right amount of “pop” to them.
