Sadly, This Was Not the Book That Made Me Redefine My Wheelhouse

Originally, I was going to use this for my Listicle square but the more I read it, the more I realized how much this book was just not my style! I saw it on Bill Gates’ summer reading list, and I really need to learn my lesson that when people use the word faith they usually mean religious faith specifically rather than some general faith in the universe.  So you know, my bad!

The author is a religion professor at Duke Divinity School, and had previously written a book about the history of the Prosperity Gospel.  I actually do think that would be an interesting topic to explore, but I admit I would definitely be approaching it with a lot of judgment.  I’m definitely more on the John Oliver side of things when it comes to that type of take on religion. Having not read Bowler’s original book, I can’t say what approach she took, but based on her references here, she definitely had a more forgiving and tolerant view, even if it is not the type of Christianity she practices.

After she is diagnosed with a fatal type of cancer, Bowler reevaluates her life, and what is important while also trying to figure out how to balance her religious views with her potentially shortened life.  

I mean, it’s hard for me to say much else about the book because it really wasn’t my kind of book.  She was very honest with the reader in sharing her life and challenges but I tend to shy away from religious books and books about dealing with death so it was rather out of my comfort zone.  I didn’t enjoy it at all but also don’t think it would be fair to give it a low rating because it really wasn’t for me, and it seems mean to rate someone’s story about their struggle with cancer.
