So after the events of book two, where John almost gets killed a few times, he activates his escape plan. John had been cultivating a false identity in Brazil for years in the eventuality that he’d need to get out of Japan and start a new life.
Unfortunately, one of the women he met in Japan is actually from Brazil, and she returns home and they start seeing each other again. She unknowingly (he thinks knowingly) leads them to John, and he’s almost killed again. Once the CIA finds him, they want him to be their “natural causes” assassin again.
The next job they send him on includes surveillance on a gambler, who is also a low-level arms dealer and potential CIA informant. John doesn’t know all the details, but he starts to enact his “natural causes” assassination, and find a woman in his way.
There’s a lot of cat and mouse between John, the woman (who has an agenda of her own), the gambler / arms dealer, the CIA, and some of his old “friends” in Japan. There’s also potential that the whole thing is a setup. He of course almost dies a bunch of times, and kills a whole bunch of people, because that’s how John rolls. He also travels from Brazil to Macau to Japan and back again.
I love the way this character is written, and I love how extremely good he is at his job. I’m going to continue this series once cbr bingo is over!
