Construction Site on Christmas Night by Sherri Duskey Rinker is like the other books in the series of construction vehicle friends. This makes it a nice addition to your collection of construction books created by Rinker and A.G. Ford. Or if you are not familiar with the series, it is also for fans of construction vehicles. It is also centered around the theme of the Christmas spirit of giving: the construction team works hard to give a special gift at the end of the book but as they end their day, there are little surprises for the construction team as well.
However, that is it. There is no real action to the story. It is a simple idea with each vehicle having the same theme basically as the rest of them: they do their job, finish and find their surprise. I am obviously not the market for this book as I am not usually a fan of construction vehicles or vehicle books in general. Yet, I see the charm of this book. It is just a sweet story about giving and Christmas.
Perhaps what makes this book (and the others in the series) special are the illustrations. That sweet, innocent look to the books that Ford created, makes them cozy. You can curl up and read. There are all sorts of shapes, but even the squares and sharp edges are muted. It is very eye-pleasing. The colors are perfect. Bold and exciting but not overpowering.
The other part that is nice is there is no overly Christian or secular elements to the story. There is no Santa or Baby Jesus. There is a tree and a star at the end but not in a “in your face” way. It is a story about (as said before) giving and friendship.
