“Fear is Power”

November 28, 2018 by Mrs Smith Reads Leave a Comment

I did not like reading Fear by Bob Woodward, and I suspect that no one else has either. I can’t say that I learned anything new about the Trump presidency—though my worst fears were confirmed. Trump is not smart. He is not thoughtful. He has no human emotions beyond greed and contempt. Trump is lazy and vengeful. The only *facts* Trump knows are the ones he makes up in his head.

Trump’s administration are frankly more evil than Trump himself. Despite their belief that they are “protecting” the nation from DJT’s stupidity and toddler-level understanding of government and legislation, they are only worsening life for every citizen in the US because, like a toddler, Trump always eventually gets his way. The truth is, his minions (Pence, Kushner, Miller, Mnunchin… well all of them) put more effort into renegotiating Trump’s bad ideas to better suit their own conservative ambitions for making America great again, than they do to protect any citizen who isn’t white and male.

Woodward’s writing style is legalistically framed and isn’t fancy or even particularly descriptive. He’s reporting, which is what he does best. While reading Fear, I was continually reminded of how much more has happened, and how much more of a sh!t show this presidency has become since it was published a mere two and a half months ago. I’m not sure how much more the US can take.

Gin-soaked, mildly European democratic-socialist popinjay and avid curator of esoteric ephemera. I work in the future. US passport, Netherlands resident, global citizen. My goal this year is to read authors from diverse backgrounds, especially women, and non-western writers, particularly speculative fiction, political analysis and historical memoirs.
