There are 2 reasons I hated this. One, it’s billed as fantasy, and really is not. Promising me something, and giving me something else is just uncool. Two, I do not enjoy at all narrative that try too hard to be philosophical. This goes there big time. The same story repeated from 3 different perspectives offering new details each time, involving werewolves and half werewolves. This is probably where the fantasy label comes from, but you need more than werewolves to bury the fact the […]
A future past where you become plant, clone, or cyborg when you die
The first few books are fun historical fiction adventure, steampunk; I haven’t read book 3 yet, but 1 and 2 are pretty good. The 4th gets a little dark but remains mostly similar. This one gets dystopic and loses the fun. Nearly every major character is killed off and brought back as a plant, descendant, cyborg, or clone, or a combination of the above. It gets stupid and meaningless. Burton and Spring-heeled Jack are both back and neither one has a clear head. Jack can’t […]
Squirrels as Superheroes Makes for Nut Puns Galore
3.5 stars. There’s a lot to like here: girl power, a not super sexy heroine, and a superhero trying to be normal as a college student. Doreen really wants to do the college thing, including boys, clubs, etc. But she’s not doing it to be normal; she just want to know computer science stuff (that would be her major, although I’m not sure why she chose it). More of this part of her story would be helpful, since a good portion of the book is […]
There’s gotta be a Game of Thrones joke here somewhere
This is a pretty good story, but somehow I didn’t like a lot about it. The final fairy tale ends up being Snow White, and while Winter fits the general outline, her Prince Charming Jacin doesn’t quite make sense. His attachment to Winter and hers to him just doesn’t seem to have much of a foundation other than they kind of grew up together and he’s been around her entire life. The other thing I didn’t really like is how the heroes spent so much […]
