CoffeeShopReader's Reviews:

Family Matters and Magic

August 5, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

This is effectively one review for two books because really, it should be one book, not two. Let it be known I find these entertaining easy reads, but there are some structural and character problems that are really starting to annoy me. 3.5 stars combined. The continuation of gradually revealing more about the world really develops in Revelations, along with what is pretty obviously the main conflict of the series: villainous wizard want to discover ‘wizarding’ gene and use this information to find and wake […]

Lucky 13 and Heroes are still fun

Usually by this point with an author, I’ve gotten bored/annoyed or they’ve gotten predictable. This is Drew Hayes book number 13 for me, and no author fatigue in sight. The only other author I can think of with this kind of reading record for me is Terry Pratchett. Drew Hayes is not Sir Terry, but not in a bad way. Did someone order another budding chef story?

July 27, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Here’s the basic premise of Brave Chef Brianna: a famous chef has become seriously ill, and he summons his 16 children, and tells them that whoever can start and run the most successful restaurant within a year will inherit his cooking empire (restaurants, tv, etc). His youngest child and only daughter is Brianna. She worries that she has less of a chance because her older brothers have all been working in the industry for years, while she’s fresh out of culinary school. The only place […]

Lady Bond Hunts Spy Ghosts and Discovers Cthulu May be Real

July 19, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Make James Bond a married woman and more complex character, allow for a very real afterlife which connects in some ways to the living realm, add an extra double cross and you’ve got Summerland. The premise is super interesting: in the late 1930s there are 2 branches of British spies, one based in the world of the living and one based in the world of the dead, called Summerland. There is massive political intrigue and likely catastrophic conflict brewing between the followers of the Presence […]
