Jen K's Reviews:

A Great Read for Young Feminists in the Making

June 18, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I probably should have reread ElCicco’s review before I started this novel since I unfortunately interpreted the word “reimagining” loosely, and was a bit disappointed with some of the topics the novel didn’t explore.  However, if I had read the review again, I would have known that this is a fairly loyal retelling as far as the scope of the story goes.  Basically, O’Neill did such a great job of building the kingdom under the sea that I wanted to spend more time there, get […]

Could Someone Send This to Chris Hemsworth as a script?

June 14, 2018 by Jen K 10 Comments

I don’t usually visualize characters that specifically when reading, having vague ideas of “attractive man” in my head.  This novel, however, proved the exception, since I couldn’t help but see Rupert Carsington as Chris Hemsworth.  More specifically, Thor: Ragnarok Chris Hemsworth with a smidge of the huntsman from Winter’s War (because of the smirk).  Rupert is another one of Chase’s hellions, never one to shy away from a fight, someone who will help the weak, surprises other characters with the occasional tidbit of knowledge when […]

I meant to read Everything I Never Told You ages ago but I think I had read too many novels about family secrets and suburbia at the time and kept putting it off for later.  I always meant to get around to it, but with the whole Reese Witherspoon book club and optioning of Little Fires Everywhere, I decided to start with Ng’s follow up. The novel, set in 1998, begins in early summer in suburban Shaker Heights, outside Cleveland, Ohio.  Ng hints at previous […]

Hearts and Thoughts They Fade, Fade Away

I loved The Bear and the Nightingale, and rather than doing my usual plunge straight into the sequel, I have been holding off on this on to try to extend and savor the story more.  However, once I saw Aquillia’s review of The Girl in the Tower, I decided I was done waiting since I wanted to be able to have a discussion. Looking back, I have noticed that while everyone seems to like The Bear and the Nightingale, the responses to certain details have […]
