I like books, but I'm SUPER picky about them. To clarify- a three star rating means that I liked the book and found nothing objectionable in it. As 3 is the average between 1 and 5 this means the book is an average read, perfectly competent but not outstanding.

The Aeronaut’s Windlass by Jim Butcher is the start to a new fantasy series. No other books in this series are out yet, but I’m sure there’s gonna be at least a couple more. This was super fun, but highly forgettable steampunk. I’ll probably pick up the next book when it comes out, but I don’t need it right away. It’s a pretty typical Butcher fantasy, I was very heavily reminded of his Codex Alera books, right down to the insect-ine enemy. The book is […]

Hard, HARD pass

I wanted very much to like this book. I saw a review for it here on Cannonball and it seemed like exactly the kind of silly, light fluff that I was feeling. And it is? But there were just too many other problems with the book, from bad writing choices to flat characters to terrible plotting, that detracted from the book and I ended up hate reading the last half of it. Most damning was that I bounced hard off the main philosophy behind the […]

Like a Cozy Sweater

Unquiet Land is the fourth book in Sharon Shin’s Elemental Blessings books. The books are each self-contained stories, so you could probably start anywhere in the series. However, if you do that you are going to be spoiled for events in previous books as they books do come in chronological order and characters from previous books appear in each successive novel. So, I really enjoy this series. It’s not great, it’s not complicated, but it is like a warm sweater you can snuggle down in […]

If you confront anyone who has lied with the truth, he will usually admit it – often out of sheer surprise.

Inspired by the recent movie adaptation I figured I should finally pick this book up and read it. I… can’t think of a single thing to say about it, except to say that I feel like a bad person for not liking it more. I tried, I really did, but I honestly think this is one of those books that only works if you don’t know the ending. As the ending of the book is one of the most famous who-done-it twists in all of […]
