I like books, but I'm SUPER picky about them. To clarify- a three star rating means that I liked the book and found nothing objectionable in it. As 3 is the average between 1 and 5 this means the book is an average read, perfectly competent but not outstanding.

The Paper Magician is a Gaslamp Fantasy that was so boringly mediocre that I want to weep at the wasted potential. The ideas behind the story, and the world building, are all deserving of a far better novel then this one ended up being. You see people can do magic with any kind of man made material, but you have to pick one particular kind of material (paper, or smelted metal, or in a twist-human flesh (because humans are man-made-get it?)) and once you choose […]

Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters is a lesbian romance novel set in late Victorian England, and it’s fine. I guess? I have absolutely no idea why I don’t like this book more than I do, but in instead of loving it I’m pretty meh on the whole thing and I want to work out why. The plot really is a romance plot; Nancy is a young fishmonger’s daughter who falls hard for the male impersonating stage performer Kitty Butler. She manages to work her […]

The Blood of Olympus is the final book in Rick Riordan’s Heroes of Olympus series, which is the second series in the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles. In addition, it’s part of the same universe as his Kane Chronicles and the Magnus Chase series (I’ve read and loved the former, haven’t started the latter yet.) And someday, I’m sure, Riordan is going to write a book where all of his heroes meet and it will either be absolutely crazy or epically awesome. I will probably read it […]

Old Childhood Favorite

Father Fox’s Pennyrhymes is an old picture book, first published in 1971, and one we had in our house when my sisters and I were growing up. I have very fond memories of it and got it for Christmas this year. I was a little worried that it wouldn’t hold up, as it’s been over 40 years since the first publication, but I think that it does. What I remember most fondly about it, the amazing and intricate illustrations are still just as beautiful to an […]
