I like books, but I'm SUPER picky about them. To clarify- a three star rating means that I liked the book and found nothing objectionable in it. As 3 is the average between 1 and 5 this means the book is an average read, perfectly competent but not outstanding.

They’re gonna make it through the hard times, mark those lines. Yea these are the ties that bind, young love

One of the things I have loved most about joining this site is the way you all have influenced my reading habits. I have been reminded about why I loved a series. I have read (and loved) books that I would never, ever have picked up on my own. And I have been introduced to new authors, in this case Rainbow Rowell. This book broke my heart in all of the good ways. Eleanor is the new girl in school and Park grudgingly allows her […]

Insert Clever Broom Metaphor Here

June 8, 2016 by melanir 2 Comments

Immediately after finishing Clean Sweep, I started on this one and devoured it whole. I adore everything about this book. And what’s really awesome is that it looks like the series is adding alternate dimensions into its ‘science’ so they can add characters from their other books. (Which is what happens in this one, but they’re from a series I haven’t read yet, so I found out by reading the Goodreads reviews). It’s completely ridiculous ‘science’ and I love it. In this one, Dina is […]

Urban Fantasy with Delusions of Science Fiction. I LOVE IT

June 7, 2016 by melanir 2 Comments

Clean Sweep is the start of a new Urban Fantasy series by Illona Andrews, the husband and wife writing team responsible another series that places pretty highly on my favorites list. This one definitely tops that one, and I look forward to many more books to come. Dina Demille is an Innkeeper, which sounds exactly like what it is. Except the clientele she draws from is  a lot more intergalactic in scope. And the Inn itself has more in common with the T.A.R.D.I.S. then an earth hotel. Well, […]

Predictable, Boring Gothic Romance

June 6, 2016 by melanir Leave a Comment

Ah, Gothic romance novels. Dark and stormy nights, curses, ghosts, witches, innocent maidens, dark broody lords. This is not the sort of thing one should find boring. And yet, The Shadows of Stormclyffe Hall is so predictable and so boring. To add insult to injury, that cover is the hottest thing about the book. I had to look at the Goodreads summary to refresh my memory about the character names. So Jane, an American graduate student, is obsessed with Stormclyffe Hall and is writing her […]
