Of course it would cost something, but he was an expert in cutting corners; and when there were no more corners left he would make circles rounder.

The Magic Barrel – 5/5 Stars This story collection came out in 1959 and contains the well known title story, but also has several other very good stories. It won the National Book Award as well. As I have previously stated in reviews, the age of the writer (here in a kind of debut effort) lends itself to an already mature and thoughtful work (this was also true for many of Raymond Chandler’s stories as well as the story collection A Lucky Man by Jamel […]

I’ll be honest. One of the reasons I chose this graphic novel was because it’s short and an easy read, and this is my final review of the year (cannonball!!) so I wanted to just get it done before the holiday crush. Krampus! was an impulse buy at our local comic book store a couple of weeks ago. They had a display at the checkout and it was the selection of the month. I Did It

I really can’t believe I’m reviewing my 52nd book of 2018, because I never thought I’d get here. 2018 was a slog, y’all. The funny thing is, I thought it was because I hadn’t read that many great books this year, but that wasn’t true at all–I could barely find a one least favorite for the CBR wrapup post because I had enjoyed almost everything I read. I just couldn’t get into writing the reviews this year. Luckily, I am extremely competitive with myself, and […]

She’s fought giants, clobbered dragons, now she’s gotta churn that butter?

December 13, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Monsters Beware! by Rafael Rosado and Jorge Aguirre is the third in the series of Claudette and her friend’s adventures. There is Giants Beware! and Dragons Beware! as well. And while this is a mostly standalone story, find the first two and read them first. Of course, if I had done that I probably would not have read this one. First, let me say the writing is great. There is a lot going on, you are wondering how they will fight the monsters, churn that […]
