I have additional rambling thoughts on Kindred

June 20, 2018 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I’ve finally made my way to reviewing our #CannonBookClub selection, Kindred. Did I ever tell you all how happy I was that this was the one we chose? Not that I wouldn’t have happily read any of our options, but Kindred has been lurking on my to read list a long time and it fulfills two of this year’s Read Harder Challenge tasks (read a genre fiction classic, read a sci-fi novel with a female protagonist by a female author). Questioning identity and a prophecy to fullfill

Jacqueline Carey is an author that delights in taking the known and giving it a twist to make something new.  She burst on to the fantasy scene with the epic Kushiel’s Dart series where she took the trope of a damsel in distress and turned it on it’s head.  Touched by Kushiel, the god of justice and punishment, to experience pleasure in pain Phedre uses her skills as a courtesan and spy to save her realm.  Her next work The Sundering duology asked the question what makes one side […]

A surface read, but an enjoyable one

I read Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series last year and didn’t think all that much of it. It read like bad fanfic, despite being more or less original. So I didn’t have the highest of expectations going into Strange the Dreamer, and got to be pleasantly surprised. I’ve even got a future hold on book 2 at the library set up. If you couldn’t tell by the title and cover, this is another young adult fantasy about a young person discovering their place in […]
