A Great Read for Young Feminists in the Making

June 18, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I probably should have reread ElCicco’s review before I started this novel since I unfortunately interpreted the word “reimagining” loosely, and was a bit disappointed with some of the topics the novel didn’t explore.  However, if I had read the review again, I would have known that this is a fairly loyal retelling as far as the scope of the story goes.  Basically, O’Neill did such a great job of building the kingdom under the sea that I wanted to spend more time there, get […]

Avatar + Arabian Nights

I got this book from my Kindle Unlimited subscription. It is marked as being for grades 8 and up. In The Hundreth Queen, Kalinda is an 18 year old girl growing up in a temple of sisters. She’s had fevers all of her life, which the healer in the temple “cures” them by giving her a daily tonic. The temple is visited by the rajah, the ruler in the community who has 99 wives. He chooses Kalinda to be his 100th. It is necessary for […]

Cooking with Magic

June 17, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I was in the local bookstore to pick something up, and what I was looking for wasn’t there. I browsed around a little since I had a 20% off coupon, and I saw this: The Wizard’s Cookbook. I made an impulse purchase. I regret nothing. This is a cookbook, but all the recipes are based on characters from modern fantasy literature and include everything from the expected Harry Potter and Wizard of Oz to the equally cool but less expected Magica DeSpell, Link, Asterix and […]

How many miles to Babylon?

Proving once more that the third book of any urban fantasy series is where it hits its stride, An Artificial Night was absolutely everything I’d been looking for in this series and more, with Toby’s supposed investigatory skills taking a back seat and the strangeness of Faerie brought to the fore. When a number of children, both fae and human, are kidnapped from their homes one night, leaving behind nothing but a strange smell and burning window-glass, Toby heads to the older fae for answers […]
