I think I have been bamboozled by this series

March 4, 2018 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

I had an unexpectedly bad reaction to this book, considering that I had relatively enjoyed the previous two books in the Call of Crows series. My impression of The Unyielding was so bad, in fact, that I don’t just think this was a bad installment in the series, but it has me questioning my taste over my higher ratings of the first two books. I’d re-read them to be sure I’m not crazy, but I don’t want to be proven right. I re-read my old […]

As with almost every book in this series, I liked it better this time. I’ve said this before, but there are advantages to reading the hard copies of the books, as much as I love the audio versions with James Marsters. And one of those advantages is it just takes so much less time to read a physical book, and stuff that you’re not enjoying either goes faster or you can skip it outright. Episode 1-09: Rats! Foiled Again!

In this episode, I further dive into the Stainless Steel Rat space opera, where a slick space criminal experiences 1970’s style hijinks.  I finish up the YA books written by the author of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books author – all of them involving kids fighting some kind of devilish dealing evil power.  And I leap back to the beginning to dip my toes in the Cosmere and ponder how Avengers: Infinity War shit’s gonna get when he finally merges all his shardfolk.

Devil in Details and Missed Chances

I liked Sandman Slim most of the time. It’s got an interesting premise of a not-fully dead human resident of Hell getting back to Earth, and trying to get revenge on the people who got him sent there. There’s also some interesting side-characters like Vidocq, Candy, and Dr. Kinski (in a very different version than the Coop stories). The various denizens of Hell who show up occasionally are pretty interesting, as is the gradually revealed backstory behind Stark’s trip to Hell in the first place. […]
