“What you learn today, for no reason at all, will help you discover all the wonderful secrets of tomorrow.”

My father is an excellent book narrator. He was in theater in high school and college (because quote “that’s where all the babes were.”) so he does all the voices and all the sounds. He was the ideal father for a bedtime story and my nephews are currently reaping the benefits of his talents. When we were younger my dad would also play rhyming games with my sister and me, driving our mother crazy, and even now he is always there with a pun. All of […]

Is She Just Going to Get a New Potential Love Interest Each Book?

Why does Empire Strike Back work so well? Because each side story that one of the main characters is on is interesting and well-thought out. If Luke had gone to Dagobah and Han and Leia stayed brooding on the Falcon and moping about Luke being gone, and then there was a random story about a previously unknown Sith lord hanging out with his mean Stormtrooper friends, there would be no international phenomenon today. Heartbroken and furious at the universe for what happened to Sir Terry. SIGH. But if you let the Nac Mac Feegle chase away the sad for […]

“We do not know what things look like. We know what things are like. It must be a very limiting thing, this seeing.”

I still love this. The last time I read A Wrinkle in Time was ten years ago. I hadn’t read the book in years before that, and barely remembered it, except for a few images that had burned into my subconscious (the man with the red eyes, for example; the Murry’s vegetable garden and their laboratory; Charles Wallace; and I remembered that I thought it was terrifying). It’s basically impossible for me to read or review it now without my childhood impressions coloring it. Because […]
