3.5 Stars After I read the lovely The Prince and the Dressmaker, I went looking for more books by the same author, Jen Wang. I found In Real Life, which she wrote with Cory Doctorow. I really liked his book Little Brother, but I never got around to reading the sequel. I liked this book too, but it was very preachy. The story is about Anda, who spends a lot of her time playing Coarsegold Online, an MMO where she is a badass redheaded fighter. […]
A 2,100 year old Druid and his talking dog Oberon do some magic and stuff.
This was a re-read for me, and I still liked it! I probably would have been okay just going into book two without a re-read and forcing my brain to delve buried memories from chasms deep or whatever, but this was a fast read and I think it was worth it. Lots of little details I know I wouldn’t have remembered, like people’s names, and entire plots . . . I mean, it’s been over four and a half years since I read it the […]

I was shocked (yes, my biased showed through) that Luvander is female. The way they introduce her, she has typical scoundrel qualities that in graphic novels stereotypically lends itself to a young male character. But the fact she is a she was introduced very casually. The other players of a very Dungeons […]
I am now a Tade Thompson fanboy
The Kinokuniya bookstore above Shinjuku Station in Tokyo has become one of my favorite stores for its excellent selection of English-language books. They have a really good sci-fi/fantasy section, and on a recent visit, they had a whole rack dedicated to recent award winners where I noticed the winner of a new award for African speculative fiction — the Nommo Award — and was intrigued enough to buy a copy. And let me just say that if there’s a better science fiction book this year […]
