Bonus points for the clever title

April 10, 2017 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I recently visited New York City with my BFF, and we spent a good 4 hours in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the last hour was futilely trying to leave, as we kept discovering new rooms full of stuff we hadn’t seen). I’ve got a BA in history, and took a lot of art history classes in high school and college. I was super proud of myself wandering through the Met as I consistently recognized art by various artists that I had studied — apparently some […]

Only 150 pages and I still couldn’t finish it

April 10, 2017 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Wow, I did not like this book. I believe it’s the first one I picked up and failed to finish all year — I made it about halfway through and gave up. Considering it was only 150 pages (and not as tall as your average book either), and that I HATE not finishing books, that’s pretty bad. “The wolf is at the door. I don’t know why you can’t hear it. But I hear it. And I know how hungry it is.” Splinterlands is set in 2050, […]

Wildly different from the first book and yet still so good

Oh my God you guys this book was so good. Like many of y’all mentioned, it’s very different from the first book, which seemed like really well-written Firefly fanfiction (not a bad thing at all!). This book is much more tightly written, focusing on just a couple of characters rather than the large crew from the first book. I think someone else mentioned Margaret Atwood in their review of it and I absolutely agree. And that’s a huge compliment coming from me! At the end […]

Sweet, if rather self-congratulatory

April 5, 2017 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

This book was written in 2015 about some events that started in 1997, when the main characters were 12. It’s written for probably a 12 to 15 year old audience. But something about the author’s voice makes it seem like a book written by a much younger person. Maybe she’s just really authentically capturing what it’s like to be a 12 year old girl, I don’t know. But I found it off-putting. I feel like the author, Caitlin, could have really benefited from making her […]
