Why are they all named Tom??

October 5, 2016 by badkittyuno 5 Comments

I’ve had a copy of Wolf Hall and its sequel, Bringing Up the Bodies, on my bookshelves for…probably a couple of years. I’ve tried reading it a couple of times, but just could not get into it — despite the fact that I freaking love historical fiction about the Tudor court (seriously — I devoured all of the Philippa Gregory books about it in like two weeks) and it’s SO well-reviewed. But when your book begins with the main character as a young boy getting the shit beat […]

Matilda all grown up!

I’ve always felt very attached to little Mara Wilson — the version from Mrs. Doubtfire and Matilda. Mrs. Doubtfire is by far one of my favorite movies (Robin Williams’s public persona has always reminded me of my dad, and sadly my parents’ marriage shares a lot with the one portrayed in the movie). And Mara’s little lisping girl was one of the best parts of the movie. She’s got some great lines. A very…I don’t want to say dull book, but it’s hardly a thriller. So, since I spend about 2-4 hours a day either driving or running and listening to audio books, I’ve been breaking Wolf Hall up with a couple other books. Ellen’s Seriously… I’m Kidding was one, which worked out perfectly since it’s pretty much the exact […]

Like a really good Lifetime movie

This book was almost a 3 star review for me, but the ending redeemed it. I got to the last few chapters thinking, “Oh come ON”, and then the author makes a pretty bold choice that I think worked out beautifully. Grace Bradshaw has been on death row for 17 years for murdering her infant son. She has maintained her innocence, but her trial painted the picture of a mom driven by a relentless need for attention, and she was convicted of poisoning him. Her older […]
