“People had gone west leaving behind all sorts of trouble; what they found in California was the space and freedom to create new trouble.”

This booked exhausted me — I couldn’t stand the characters (I believe one of my status updates while reading it wished death upon the mother) and it was just horrible event after horrible event. I get that the 1830s were probably not the greatest time to be alive, but still! “Prying out a stump reminded him of how deeply a tree clung to the ground, how tenacious a hold it had on a place. Though he was not a sentimental man – he did not […]

Shel Silverstein with swear words

July 12, 2016 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Okay, so this was pretty light, silly reading — but I definitely needed it after the last few books I’ve read. “I love you just the way you are but you don’t see you like I do. You shouldn’t try so hard to be perfect. Trust me, perfect should try to be you.” This collection of illustrated poems by comedian Bo Burnham reminded me very much of Shel Silverstein, with a lot more swearing. The description “Fight Club meets Margaret Atwood” could not be more accurate. “We can’t hide it or fake it. We’ll never fit society’s idea for how women should look and behave, but why is that a tragedy? We’re free to live how we want. It’s liberating, if you choose to see it that way.” Dietland stars Plum Kettle, a woman who has struggled with her weight her whole […]

Twister is a lot less fun in real life

July 12, 2016 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I’ve always been fascinated with natural disasters, tornadoes in particular. I’ve lived my whole life in north Texas, in an area that sees a lot of impressive thunderstorms and tornado warnings, but rarely any actual tornadoes (although that insane F4 that hit Garland, Texas last Christmas was only about 15 miles from my house). That’s allowed me to see the nifty parts of the storms without ever really suffering any damage. I’ve been really, really lucky. The people of Moore, Oklahoma have a lot more […]
