Bonus review: Happy New Year!

December 31, 2016 by Malin 3 Comments

I know I said yesterday that number 134 was going to be my last review of the year, but that was before I remembered that there was a Rainbow Rowell short story out there in the world that I hadn’t read. Also, it has it’s own entry on Goodreads, so even though it’s part of a bigger anthology, My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories (eleven of which I have yet to read), I don’t feel reviewing it is cheating. 135 is a […]

Population Control 101: China

December 31, 2016 by Orleanas Leave a Comment

What would China’s population be today if the government had not stepped in to control the population growth? In 1979, China faced a problem: With one billion people, the country made up 25% of world’s population. In 1980, to combat this problem, China instituted its population-control program: the one child per family policy, an unprecedented, radical take on population control. I’m not sure if it was because both times I listened to this, it was too late to give it my best attention, or if it was the story itself, but this was my least favourite of the series. Alex Jennings returns as narrator, along with the other characters adding a sense of unity […]

Break down the self, offer yourself up like dust to the universe.

In the Cannonball Read Facebook group, someone awesome posted an article called “The best books of 2016 list you get when you combine 36 “Best Books of 2016” lists.” The Girls is 6th on that list, appearing in 10 of the 36 “Best Books of 2016” lists combined for the “ultimate list.” It’s okay. Here’s what it has going for it: it’s completely real. Here’s what it has against it: it’s not new. The Girls is the story of an older woman reminiscing about that […]
