You’ve got to hide your love away

March 6, 2016 by maydays 3 Comments

I’ve not seen Carol, the Cate Blanchett/Rooney Mara film adapatation of this novel, but I can see how beautifully this work would translate to film, especially in the hands of Blanchett.  She is perfect for the role of Carol, a rather cool and collected wealthy suburbanite.  Carol becomes the singular romantic focus of Therese, a very young aspiring NYC set designer, after a brief meeting in the toy department of the store where Therese works.  The relationship between Therese and Carol develops slowly, until Therese […]

I am a weirdo who watches the films first if there’s a film of a book. Because I’m either going to want to watch it anyway if I like the book, or someone is going to “make me” watch it. By make me, I of course mean enthusiastically encourage me enough that I feel guilty if I don’t and/or adds it to the our Netflix queue so that I watch out of desire for snuggles. I haven’t actually seen the film, but the trailers and still photographs project a certain sort of aesthetic that I found intriguing–rich colours, gleaming cocktails, and soft lights; crisp coral lipstick on a smile that says come hither and f**k off. This is the first novel of Highsmith’s that I’ve read; as Val McDermid points out on the cover of my edition, it has “the drive […]

Curiosity Should’ve Killed The Cat… Tris

The main theme to Divergent is that there are two sides to every coin. Or, in this case, every faction. Humanity has been divided into five factions: Abnegation (selflessness), Amnity (kindness), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery), and Erudite (knowledge). Each believed, on inception, that theirs was the way to prevent future war, and at age 16 the children of this world must choose which they believe. Each faction has their own headquarters and initiation, and if you choose a faction that is not the one you […]
