Stay Out of the Woods!

February 12, 2018 by Melina Leave a Comment

In reading a few of Ruth Ware’s books, I’ve learned that either I’m a genius or her plot twists can be seen a mile away. In this case, I guessed it when I was reading the synopsis on Amazon.  But…hear me out, Ruth Ware’s writing is pretty tight and you’re still drawn in even though you’re going to know what’s going to happen.   This wasn’t one of my favorites of hers because I thought that the last 1/3 of the book was blah.  The building […]

The Lying Games – 1/5 Stars Well I thought this book was pretty bad. It’s a 1/5 because what I thought was absolutely horrendous about the mystery became merely annoying by the end. For one, the stakes were so incredibly low for the actual crime, until they tightened toward the end, but mostly because, well, you can have a low stakes kind of book…so many contemporary novels are that way, but the writing has to be good enough to carry it. The Lying Game is about four friends who are living their separate lives in England, all while hiding a secret that they have been lying about since they were in high school together.  When something threatens to expose their secret, they come together […]

A mysterious murder and excess alcohol consumption? Must be an unreliable female narrated thriller…

October 9, 2017 by Aquillia Leave a Comment

I’ve been on a bit of a thriller kick recently, so–like many other Cannonballers–I’ve read In a Dark Dark Wood and The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware. They relied very heavily on the ‘unreliable female narrator’ trope, bringing up inevitable comparisons to The Girl on the Train. They’re not as good as Girl on the Train. (I haven’t read Gone Girl, while I have seen the film, so I can’t compare there.) I’m way behind on my reviewing, but I figured I’d start with these ones. Quick […]
