‘Journal of the Undead: Littleville Uprising’ is the story of twins Emma and Matt as they move to Littleville and try to fit in. As it turns out they will soon have more to worry about than typical teenage high school dramas as a zombie uprising is on the horizon.
I got very easily engrossed in this book right from the beginning – this is an entertaining read with no filler, and it’s very character focused, which I love! I’ve been less impressed by YA novels of late but this one restored my interest in the genre. I would recommend it as a good transition novel for YA fans who’ve never read anything in the zombie genre before. The horror was well done and had a lot of impact when it occurred as it wasn’t constant. There were a few memorable gruesome bits, some very tense moments and a teen romance going on at the heart of the story.
Emma was my favourite character, I found her the most interesting and easiest to sympathise with. I wasn’t sure about Evan right away but he grew on me by the end. Lucy was pretty much instantly likeable, and Whitney and Jake I disliked the second they showed up. I felt like there was probably more to Matt but he wasn’t focused on as much as his sister in this book. By the time I finished reading I was wishing the second book in the series was out as I was keen to keep reading!
Overall this is an excellent debut novel telling an engrossing YA zombie tale. Highly recommended to fans of YA and zombie horror fans alike!
