Not what I was expecting.

July 7, 2016 by narfna 4 Comments

paper girlsOkay, help, you guys. This hasn’t been reviewed for CBR yet, and I need someone to explain it to me. I literally do not understand what is happening with this comic. I WANT to like it, and parts of it are downright amazing (the art, in particular, has this great retro 80s vibe, and the characters are typical BKV amazingness) but THE PLOT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME. People were losing their minds over this, so I couldn’t believe when it I closed the first trade and felt only confusion.* I don’t even know what to rate it!!

*I believe my exact reaction was first to close the book calmly, and then loudly exclaim, WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED.

I mean, this may be my fault and what was I thinking even, but going in I was under the impression this was just going to be comic about girls on paper routes in the 80s, but it opens with this hellish demon spawn nightmare thing one of the girls is having, so I should have caught a clue.

I think this is all I have to say about this comic until I can understand what it is about and what it is trying to do. I feel that’s only fair.

So, help?

      SIGH.

At least I’m not the only one.

The idea is that the reader is supposed to be just as confused and vulnerable as the protagonists. Vaughn said in an interview that this was “by design” and not to worry, because they have a plan and it will all start coming together soon. One of the best comics out right now.
