Back in Black

October 10, 2016 by Belphebe Leave a Comment

I must confess that this a re-read of this book, but I honestly couldn’t remember much about the plot.  Terry Pratchett is my comfort food.  I can reread his books over and over and still be entertained and gain deeper understanding of the author and the characters he has created.  I have been reluctant to read the final book in this series as it is final book by the author who died last year from Alzheimer’s Disease.

So I procrastinated by re-reading I Shall Wear Midnight.  Given the fear that is sweeping this nation personified by Donald Trump, reading about the Cunning Man, a ghostly apparition that spreads fear and prejudice where ever he goes was fitting.

Tiffany is a witch.  She is also a caregiver, cutting toenails, helping new mothers learn to parent and fighting back against domestic violence and child abuse.  Oh yeah this book about witches and fairies and trolls goes there.

It also deals with the damage prejudice does to the individuals who believe it, the communities where that prejudice leads to violence and the scars that remain.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of light moments.  The wee free men are bouncing about in support of their “Hag O’ the Hills” and there is flirting.  Adorable flirting.

If you haven’t read any Tiffany Aching Books, then start at the beginning with The Wee Free Men and follow through the series.  They are a quick read, full of wonderful characters, joy, heartbreak and magic.

“People aren’t just people, they are people surrounded by circumstances.”
