This book is book crack.

hating-gameI fell in love with this book within, like, five minutes of starting it. I had zero problems with it, and I went basically full cartoon heart-eyes* the entire time I was reading it. So, you know, keep that in mind for the rest of this review. Critical thinking skills not getting much use here from me.

*Or, because I’m watching Steven Universe for the first time right now, we might also say I went full star-eyes. I’m halfway through season one right now and already loving it.

I’m sooooo glad I have CBR to recommend books like this to me, because with my relatively new and strange aversion to contemporary or plain old vanilla fiction, I probably would have never picked it up on my own. But sooo many people were raving about it, y’all got my curiosity monster all excited and I had to see for myself what was going on up in here.

Hate to love romances done right are like catnip to me, and this one hit all the right notes. Lucy was so likable. One of my Goodreads friends called her a “spitfire”, and that seems accurate. I liked her sense of humor and how she just really goes after Josh, her “nemesis” with all she’s got. And I loved Josh. It’s so easy to mess up a guy who seems like a jerk, and turn him into an ACTUAL jerk, but Sally Thorne nails it. Once you realize what’s really going on with him (SPOILER: he’s super shy, and Lucy has misread him from the beginning), both you and Lucy get to have the pleasure of re-thinking all past interactions in the light of this new information.

It was also exactly the type of humor that I really enjoy, but that part (and all of it, really) is YMMV.

Don’t want to say too much more about this book other than I really want to re-read it and buy myself a copy, and I’m soooo excited for her next book.

I got it in audio, and listened to the audio book in about two days, within ten days of reading the book the first time. I am so happy I discovered this early, because based on the cover (trying to hide it as general fiction), I may not have given it a chance and that would mean I never got to spend all that time with Lucy and Josh. So cute.

I’ve had the audiobook on my wishlist since I finished the book. It’s taking a significant portion of my willpower not to cave and buy it. (All my credits until the end of the year are already spoken for.)

It is SO, SO, SO good and the writing is just endlessly wry and hilarious. Best of the year.

Yes, the writing! I didn’t even mention that. So clever and fun.
