Everybody Sucks But Me

December 13, 2016 by emmalita Leave a Comment

Kate BishopI have enjoyed Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye series tremendously. I enjoy Fraction’s Clint Barton much more than the Barton in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Volume 3, though, focuses on the other Hawkeye, Kate Bishop. Kate is 21 and from a wealthy family. She may be young and brash, but she’s a great Hawkeye, especially when paired with Clint Barton. Unfortunately, Clint is wallowing in his own feelings and Kate decides she can’t watch anymore. So she takes The dog, flips off daddy and heads for the West Coast.

LA Woman is fun and interesting, but without Clint, feels ungrounded. Perhaps that’s intended. Kate did leave Clint and New York City to strike out on her own. It isn’t really until the last issue in the collection that Kate seems to come into focus.

When Kate arrives in LA, with Clint’s dog and her daddy’s credit card and car, everything falls apart. The card is declined and destroyed and the car is repossessed. Kate is taken in by a kindly, fabulously wealthy woman. What could go wrong? Well, everything. But she’s got Arrow/Lucky/Pizza Dog and her spunky attitude. Plus, she’s basically an Avenger.

Like Clint, she helps people who are being screwed over – neighbors, reclusive billionaires and mysterious men. All the while she is facing off against Madam Masque , who seems to be behind, well, a lot. She and her in no way inconspicuous goons dressed as bell hops from the 40’s are everywhere.

Kate Bishop learns a lot about herself, her abilities, and the true nature of being a superhero. Superheroes don’t always win, but they never give up, especially not when the odds are against them.
