Velvet…if you please (don’t murder me).

August 26, 2018 by ardaigle 2 Comments

You know how there are just too many strong female secret agents to choose from, in the same vein as James Bond or Jack Reacher or Jason Bourne, or raspy Liam Neeson, or raspy Jason Staham or whoever Tom Cruise is in the Mission Impossible movies?

Except, like, not.

What I’m saying is, women are hurting for representation in this genre, and the Velvet series is here to fill that gap and make you very very happy. And make a lot of dudes really really dead.

Velvet is, as far as most people know, is just another secretary in a spy agency, shuffling paper, arranging logistics, and shrugging off the advances of field agents. She’s not new, and is the right hand of the man at the top, but just an office worker. Except that is not the whole story. When someone dies under suspicious circumstances she takes herself out of retirement to see what has gone wrong, and how deep the conspiracy goes.

It doesn’t take long for Velvet to show herself as someone not to be trifled with, and yet, they keep trying to trifle with her. Dudes. Get it together. She is smart, determined, calculating, and a breath of fresh air for anyone who likes to see a woman who can hold her own in a male-dominated field. Is the story fresh? Not terribly, but the perspective is, and I am here for it.

I actually read the version with three separate graphic novels and I recommend reading it all in a row. I spaced it out a little and found it confusing to keep the cast of characters straight, though really, it is a story more about plot than character development and exposition. It is a fun romp, and I plan to recommend it to many who enjoy the genre and are happy to see women get a chance to have some fun in it.

I am a born and bred southerner and recent transplant to the Midwest. I read because I want to, because I NEED to, and because I'm possibly ignoring the frigid temperatures. Until spring, and then I may read outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. View ardaigle's reviews»

Ha! Never apologize for song lyric titles! I never know if people notice when I sneak mine in – it might also be that my playlist is very 90s/00s.
