Brian K. Vaughan – take my money.

I am an unabashed Brian K. Vaughan fan – Y the Last Man, Runaways, and Saga are all inspired series’ and I was excited for this one, boasting a rad group of female protagonists. As the story begins, we meet the “paper girls” who are newspaper delivery girls in the suburbs in the late 80s. It is the day after Halloween and the weird-os are still out, but what they presume is post-Halloween hijinks is really warring elements of otherworldly creatures. Throw in a little time travel to a modern timeline and we have the makings of a great science fiction story. Not to mention past and future selves holding a meet-and-greet, which can probably only spell trouble.

It was good, really good, but, if I had to rank it with the other three, it would be my least favorite. I don’t think that is even in indictment of this series, but it is just that the others were THAT GOOD that this was fell a little flat. My expectations were sky high and it just didn’t have the same with as the others series and seemed almost mundane compared to a post-apocalyptic earth (Y), super villain kids (Runaways) and whatever the hell is happening in Saga.

I think this could be a good entry comic or graphic novel. It is “out there” without being so out there as to alienate someone new to the genre. Regardless of all I have said, whether you are a Vaughan fan or Vaughan newbie, this series is a good one.
