3 swift sleighs, 4 lobster rolls, 8 skaters carving, and a blue jay in a spruce tree!

December 20, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Twelve Days of Christmas in New England (also in a hardcover version) is just the Twelve Days of Christmas song with New England features. Fun, but a limited audience.

I read the board book size. This is not a bad way to present the song. However, the extras at the end (Vermont you ski and Maine you eat lobsters. Yes, a simplistic explanation, but that is the idea: the highlights are hit) might be a bit too much for the younger audience. In the larger format I am assuming this would also be easier to enjoy as it is not all crammed on two normal board book sized pages.

I grew up/live in Vermont and therefore, was familiar with those highlights, but some New England highlights I was not aware of. Yet, did know of lobsters, Time Square and a few others. If you are from New England and your child is not (or they just visited for the holidays) it will be a fun gift.

Toni Buzzeo and Liza Woodruff did their research and did a good job of making the song take on a new life. I am a fan of taking a song like Twelve Days of Christmas and making a positive, fun parody or in this case, homage, to the original. It is when it goes “naughty” that I do not think it is a nice book.

If you like books about Christmas, Christmas songs, songs made into books or the Twelve Days of Christmas this would be a great addition to your collection.
