About ChainedVase

CBR 8
CBR 9

I spend most of my waking hours reading and re-reading picture books to my 2 demanding Squishies, about which I have strong opinions (both the books and the Squishies). I hope to actually read some grown up books this year, but I probably won't feel as passionately about them as I do the children's books, to be fair.

ChainedVase's Reviews:

Crime doesn’t pay.

I’m counting these two books as only one review because, while not in fact a series, the hat motif is a theme that the author/ illustrator seems to be exploring. My review will likely contain more words than the 2 books combined. A third Hat book called We Found A Hat was released in October 2016. It will be my Xmas gift to myself! When I worked at the bookstore, I chose This Is Not My Hat book as my staff pick and sold it […]

Once Upon A Midnight Dreary…

October 29, 2016 by ChainedVase 4 Comments

In honour of Halloween, a spoooooky children’s book. Edgar is a little raven with a tough life. His mom is always telling him to finish his vegetables, stop bothering his sister, clean his room, take a bath… to all of which Edgar responds: NEVERMORE! Until his mom reads him a bedtime story (you guessed it, The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe) and promises she will love him EVERMORE. This book is very simply written and illustrated. The illustrations are black and white with pops of […]

Another installment of the adventures of Granny Weatherwax. This time, she’s left her home to travel the world and glare at foreigners. She and Nanny Ogg decide to ‘help’ Magrat to be a Fairy Godmother, with interesting results. This book examines fairy tales and the power of story in shaping how people interpret their lives. Magrat inherits the magic wand of Fairy Godmothering and has to travel to far-away Genua to perform her duties to her god child, who is basically Cinderella. Granny and Nanny […]

The game’s a foot!

First I have to say that I am a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes. I’m not like, a Baker Street Irregular, but I read the Conan Doyle stories, and I like to read re-imaginings and watch TV/movie adaptations and all that. So I went into this YA version looking to enjoy it. And I did! This modernized story posits that Sherlock Holmes and Dr James Watson were real people and that Arthur Conan Doyle was Watson’s literary agent. This is the story of their teenaged […]
