About ChainedVase

CBR 8
CBR 9

I spend most of my waking hours reading and re-reading picture books to my 2 demanding Squishies, about which I have strong opinions (both the books and the Squishies). I hope to actually read some grown up books this year, but I probably won't feel as passionately about them as I do the children's books, to be fair.

Sci Fic + Mystery = Yes please!

The best part of this book is something that if I talk about, its ruined. Dammit, you guys. This is a good fun Science Fiction mystery story. My beloved Isaac Asimov, who wrote both SF and mysteries, said that it was possible to write a mystery set in the future, and invent all kinds of new gadgets and technology but still have challenges to solve, as long as you don’t rely on some kind of techno-magic device to save the day. This book is a […]

The Divine Phryne…

After my re-read of Amelia Peabody, I was in the mood for a historical mystery with a little more spice, so what better than Miss Fisher? Like all red-blooded humans, I’m pretty obsessed with Phryne. For those who may not know (how? why? examine your life choices, people) the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries are an Australian-set series of books about a lady detective in 1928. She is fabulous, adventurous and super sexy. There are also 3 seasons of TV based on the series. (Netflix. Watch […]

The love of my beloved is on yonder side A width of water is between us And a crocodile waiteth on the sandbank. – Ancient Egyptian Love Poem Inspired by all you lovely reviewers and your passion for Romance, I decided to re-read one of my favourite series, and the closest thing to a romance novel in my reading history. I’m not anti-romance by any means, just not an avid romance reader (yet!). The Amelia Peabody novels suit all my interests: mystery, romance, humour, feminism, […]

Sisters are doing it for themselves.

So, Terry Pratchett is (was, sob) my favourite author and this is one of my favourites of his many many books. I was seriously considering doing my Cannonball of only Discworld books. But I only signed up for a half-Cannonball and there are 41 Discworld books, so… maybe next year? The Discworld is a gorgeous, rich, complex creation. Partly because Sir Terry wrote over 40 books about it, which covers a lot of ground (literally) and partly because he was a skilled world-builder with a […]
