DC Super Hero Girls Past Times At Super Hero High by Shea Fontana

Kid-friendly take on DC’s finest

September 26, 2017 by J Leave a Comment

I enjoy the DC Super Hero Girls series. It’s a fun entry point for younger readers ready to move up to chapter books, populated with friendly versions of popular superhero characters. My daughter (8) is not really a reader, but she gets very excited about these books. The bad guys aren’t terribly scary, which works well for my sensitive kiddo. The gang takes a field trip to the Jurassic period to learn about dinosaurs. The kids get the full dinosaurs experience: chased by a Tyrannosaurus […]

Fab Babs Becomes Batgirl

August 27, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

While Batman is famous for lurking in the shadows, Beatty and Dixon’s Batgirl is in the shadows for an altogether different reason. Barbara Gordon is the daughter of Gotham’s top cop, Commissioner Jim Gordon. No matter she does, she’s Commissioner Gordon’s daughter. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons that the Commish doesn’t want his daughter fulfilling her dream of becoming a cop. “One in the family is enough!” he says. Nothing substantial happens in volume two of the Batgirl reboot, and I didn’t mind at all. Barbara Gordon and her gang of friends are fun to hang out with, regardless of whether this particular collection has a overarching story thread or meaningful character development. As an economical comics fan, I generally prefer to buy books of short runs and defined arcs. But, Batgirl’s characters and art are too fun to ignore. This collection carries along the best aspects of volume one (http://cbr.bgwdesigns.com/2015/10/when-superheroes-use-tinder-for-good/) while toning down […]

Small Victories: At Least They Aren’t Wearing Heels Most of the Time

December 27, 2015 by Quorren Leave a Comment

I started reading the Birds of Prey series back in CBRIV and then I learned that Gail Simone didn’t start off writing the series and what I thought was Birds of Prey Volume 1 was actually Volume 3.  And since I’m a completionist, I had to go back and get the real Volumes 1 and 2. And if Volume 1 is any indication, I can see why DC essentially rebooted the series with Volume 3 when Simone took over.  I knew Simone was heralded as […]
