A Nazi, a Fascist, a Communist, a novelist, a countrywoman, and a Duchess walk into a bar-and I don’t know what happened because I didn’t finish the book

January 21, 2017 by expandingbookshelf 2 Comments

I hate quitting on books. Hate. It. Because I’m a fast reader, I can usually convince myself to stick with my read. But I white-knuckled my way through about 100 pages of “The Six: The Lives of the Mitford Sisters” before I finally tossed it and moved on. Life’s too short. I’d never heard of the Mitford Sisters before but I guess they’re pretty famous. They were socialites who managed to deliver more drama than the Kardashians. I have been previously underwhelmed by Laura Florand, but was heartily encouraged to try, in particular, this and one of her other novels as a better representation of her potential. I’m now very scared I am going to be shunned. Here is the plot summary — it’s basically You’ve Got Mail — in Goodreads’ words: “Welcome to La Maison des Sorcieres. Where the window display is an enchanted forest of sweets, a collection of conical hats delights the eye and the habitues nibble chocolate witches […]

I Just Can’t Do This Anymore

I did not finish this book. I spent days trying to read My American Duchess and I cannot spend anymore of my life on this. The back 40% can’t possibly save the first 60%. Halfway through this book, I realized I hated the characters and the plot. Shortly after that I realized I hated the author. It starts off as a love triangle with all the tension of over cooked spaghetti. American heiress, Merry Pelford has just accepted the marriage proposal of Cedric Allardyce, the […]

Another romance that doesn’t exactly know how consent works

December 26, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 1 Comment

Editorial note: I read this back in July, and wasn’t planning on reviewing it for CBR, but now that I’m trying to get to 104, you get a rambling rant. Enjoy! I had been excited for this one because it’s an erotic romance set in the regency era, in the US! Which is not something I have read before! The hero was immediately disappointing. He barely seemed to like the heroine at all, except for sexual/possession purposes. And I guess that therefore I didn’t really […]
