Escape from Werewolf Island

December 18, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

[Beware of MILD SPOILERS from previous books]

The Hollows, Book 4

A Fistful of Charms is the fourth book in The Hollows series. Rachel survived her demon dilemma by making a deal with a rival demon named Newt. At least, she’s got her soul and back to only one demon mark. Her romance is progressing with Kisten, albeit a bit dangerously as she refuses to let him bite her. Meanwhile, Ivy still yearns for Rachel to accept her blood rites and friendship. This witch is caught in a blood triangle with her roommate and her boyfriend! Things get a lot more complicated before they get better when Rachel considers Ivy’s blood proposal later in the book.

David, a lone wolf insurance adjuster, helped Rachel bring down the other supernatural big bad in book 3. In exchange, she became his alpha and got some much needed health insurance. Evil trying to kill you all the time is sure hard on a girl’s wallet. In this book, Rachel and David discover that his wolf buddies aren’t too keen with a witch playing alpha. They set a trap for her and challenge her authority. They barely escape, but the wolves make it known that if David doesn’t tow the line and join a pack, they’ll continue to challenge his alpha. Rachel isn’t about to let them win and cooks up a wolf transformation spell with Ceri to turn instantly with a magic word. It’s a bit of demonic black magic, but she really has no choice.

The spell becomes quite handy as she ends up on roadtrip to Lake Michigan to rescue her ex-boyfriend, Nick, and Jenks’ son, Jax. With a human sized Jenks, more demon magic used to make him big enough to survive the winter elements, they embark on a rescue mission. Jenks still isn’t on good terms with Rachel, but desperate measures allow him to crush his pride. They soon find Jax safe in a butterfly exhibit in a small town. But Nick stole a powerful werewolf artifact from some pretty crazy ass packs of werewolves who are holding him hostage on an island in the lake. Even though Rachel doesn’t love Nick anymore, she refuses to leave him in the lurch. They sneak onto the island and she desperately ends up transforming into a wolf to challenge the leader to let Nick go. I won’t tell you how it all turns out, but getting off that island isn’t going to be that simple for the gang.

The fourth book wasn’t my favorite, but still enjoyable. However, the blood triangle seems to rear its head at the worst time during this rescue mission. I suppose, Rachel’s life would of course be more complicated than not. Really loved to see more of David and Harrison’s twist on werewolf mythology. And a human sized Jenks apparently is a total heartthrob! My favorite scenes are him wreaking havoc with his charming smile all over the small town in Michigan. It was good to leave the Cincinnati setting for awhile.

This is my last #CBR6 review for the series as I decided to take a break and focus on my book club reading duties. However, I’ll be back with further reviews for #CBR7!
