Detective Boobs Fights Ghosties

April 30, 2015 by McM 2 Comments

These two graphic novels, The Unknown and The Unknown: Devil Made Flesh, were good enough, but I was repeatedly sucked right out of the story by the main character’s overdone breasts.

Let me explain. Here’s the description: “Revered as the smartest person alive, Catherine Allingham is the world’s most famous provate investigator. Follow her adventures as she sets out to solve the one mystery she’s never been able to crack-death!”

TU   TUDMF

These were the covers that enticed me to pick these up at the library. Pretty artsy, creepy. But the artwork inside was not as well done, and the main character’s boobs were front and center way too often for my taste hence the 3 star rating.

Spoliers lurk below!!

*********************

Allingham has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, and refuses surgical intervention because the doctors cannot promise that she will return to baseline afterwards. She’s got 6 months to live. So she is investigating death and the afterlife. She is drawn as a Sherlock-esqe detective, with a private jet and a mysterious pill addiction. Her sidekick James Doyle, is hired after a chance meeting at a bar where he’s working as a bouncer. She needs someone who is observant because she has started having visions, and cannot trust her own eyes. They are tracking a stolen device that was created to measure the human soul (dun dun dun). They eventually end up in Europe at an abandoned sanitarium that is not so abandoned (dun dun dun).

The second book picks up 6 months after the events of The Unknown, and Allingham has no memory of Doyle. All in all a good story, and I like the relationship between these two, and the storyline, but the boobs get me everytime. Don’t get me wrong, I like a bit of cleavage just like anyone else, but this character was clearly drawn for a specific type of gaze and it wasn’t mine.
