Whale Watching for Lovers

October 8, 2015 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Oh look, Jojo Moyes wrote a book I liked. I will admit that it took me a little bit to get into this one; but luckily I discovered my sister was reading the same book at the same time and she assured me it got better. Or rather that the pace picked up after about 70 pages.
I think my biggest complaint was there were too many narrators! While I appreciate getting multiple points of view it can get a little distracting. I believe the final count was six different people. Overkill.

Silver Bay is about a real estate developer who travels to a remote area of Australia in hopes to secure permits for his London based company to build a mega-resort and spa, complete with water-skiing. Kathleen, famous for catching a shark at seventeen, owns a small bed and breakfast in Silver Bay that will be threatened by the new development. She lives in the hotel with her niece, Liza, and Liza’s daughter Hannah. Liza has run away from London for reasons she doesn’t divulge to anyone in Silver Bay but cause her to be overly cautious about her personal life. The Whalecatchers are a group of residents who make their livings giving dolphin and whale watching tours; they are concerned about the environmental impact the new resort will have on the surrounding sea life.

Mike, our real estate developer, develops (heh heh) romantic feelings for Liza and becomes protective of Hannah and the whales of Silver Bay; he soon realizes he must make an important decision regarding his personal future if he wants a chance at saving the future of Silver Bay. Liza’s personal trauma from years past is brought to light, although I didn’t quite understand why they thought dragging that out would do any good for the whales…

I am quickly running out of Jojo Moyes novels to read which is a shame because she consistently writes romantic stories with a bit of substance. This one probably had the best supporting cast of characters she’s written yet!
