The Ruth will set you free.

January 26, 2016 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

I read three sort of meh mysteries on my trip, but my plane ride home was rocked by this biography of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. A well-written (and funny! and interesting!) book about a fascinating (and funny! and BOLD!) woman. Every one of you needs to go read this book.

“The pedestal upon which women have been placed has all too often, upon closer inspection, been revealed as a cage.”

Inspired by a tumblr page (which lends a few great images to the book), Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a detailed biography of a Supreme Court justice, and an absolutely fascinating woman that I totally knew nothing about. We learn about Ruth’s upbringing, her determination to be more than a housewife, her fantastic marriage to a man who only wanted more for her, and her time as a lawyer and a judge. She spent years not only fighting for women’s rights, but for men’s as well, such as cases where widowed men were denied rights because no laws were in effect to protect a man who also cared for his children. It’s amazing how far we’ve come, and how far we have to go.

Ruth has been making waves quietly for years, but just recently has really broken into the spotlight through a combination of her increasingly vocal presence on the Supreme Court, and her embrace of pop culture. This book takes you through that journey, and I PROMISE you will love it.
