How do you solve a problem like having to write a review about the last book in a great YA series? It feels impossible. Thank god I wasn’t doing Cannonball Read when the 7th Harry Potter book came out. My review would have just been a string of “I don’t knows” and “oh my gods” and “I can’t evens.”
I don’t want to summarize the book because spoilers, so maybe I’ll just talk around the plot. Stiefvater took on the Herculean task of wrapping up a wide swath of plot points in an interesting and satisfying way. Luckily, she succeeded. It couldn’t have been easy writing it with major expectation from fans, especially after the book release was pushed back half a year.
There are a few nitpicky complaints that knocked this down a star, but I won’t dwell on them here. For the most part, I was caught up in Stiefvater’s excellent storytelling skills, enthralled by where the characters were going to end up next. She managed to surprise me with the plot, not something that always happens to adults reading YA.
This was a bittersweet read knowing it was the last time I’d get to hang out with Blue and her raven boys. I highly recommend this fun series to anyone looking for a deep dive into a magical modern-day setting with unforgettable characters.
