“I’m proud to be a work in progress.”

April 25, 2017 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

I downloaded this audiobook because someone on here reviewed it favorably (I’m 5 reviews behind so I’m not going to take the time to look up who, but thanks!) and I needed something to listen to while I’m waiting for my next Audible credit to spend on Outlander. I had no idea that Hannah Hart was the Drunk Kitchen chick, despite having recently read the Drunk Kitchen cookbook. The cookbook was fun and all, but this autobiography was excellent. I’d highly recommend the audio version, read by the author herself.

“Over the past ten years, I’ve processed a lot. I’m still processing. And there is more to be done. But I’m very proud of the person I am today. I’m proud to be gay. I’m proud to be a reckless optimist. I’m proud to keep learning and sharing what I’ve learned. I’m proud to be a work in progress.”

Hannah talks about her childhood, which was pretty messed up. Her father was a strict Jehovah’s Witness, whose teachings led Hannah to decades of self-loathing about her sexuality. Her mother was schizophrenic, leaving Hannah to be cared for by an older sister, and to care for a younger sister in turn. Hannah has suffered from PTSD, depression and struggles with her own identity. She talks frankly about her troubles, and has an intelligent voice with just enough humor.
