March stat round-up!

April 4, 2017 by ingres77 20 Comments

We are on fire this year. Each of the last three months has surpassed the corresponding totals from the previous three years. And vel veeter is reading and reviewing at a record pace (the previous record for fastest to reach 128 reviews was janniethestrange, achieved on July 6, 2015. janniethestrange would go on to review 230 books that year.)

On with the stats!

March stats:
446 reviews (last Mar. saw 312 reviews; this is the third highest month of all time, behind Jan. 2017 and Jan 2014)
Average rating: 3.61 stars (Feb: 3.57)
Most popular book: The Devourers by Indra Das (7 reviews, 2.29 average)
Most popular author: Indra Das (7 reviews; 2.29 avg)
Most reviews: vel veeter (congratulations on 54 reviews! This is the first Cannonball month that I’ve found.)
Fiction: 355 reviews (Feb: 369)
Nonfiction: 86 reviews (Feb: 61)
Uncategorized: 8 reviews (Feb: 3)
Most popular genres: Fantasy (93 reviews), Romance (64), Mystery (59)
Male authors: 126 (Feb: 169)
Female authors: 309 (Feb: 259)
Oldest book read this month: The Book of Genesis  (~500 BCE)
Books from 2017: 53 (Feb: 38)
Books from the last 10 years: 315 (Feb: 307)
Most common languages: English (91%), Japanese (2.2%)
Avg. Goodreads rating: 3.96 stars
Avg. Goodreads vote totals: 65,916
Avg. page count: 314
Average author age: 47.
Books read for the first time: 224
Book with the most CBR reviews: Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel (37 reviews)
Pages read: 136,000+

Reviewer averages (minimum of 10 reviews):
alwaysanswerb (13 reviews, 3.73 stars, 412 pages)
badkittyuno (40 reviews, 3.73 stars, 323 pages)
bonnie (20 reviews, 3.95 stars, 241 pages)
Caitlin_D (14 reviews, 3.86 stars, 309 stars)
Classic (20 reviews, 3.78 stars, 310 pages)
ingres77 (11 reviews, 3.86 stars, 315 pages)
Malin (12 reviews, 4.04 stars, 377 stars)
melanir (10 reviews, 3.30 stars, 350 pages)
Mikki Blu (13 reviews, 3.00 stars, 318 pages)
vel veeter (54 reviews, 3.30 stars, 264 pages)
yesknopemaybe (10 reviews, 3.80 stars, 294 pages)

Our monthly review breakdown (and leader):
Jan – 502 (vel veeter)
Feb – 431 (Classic)
Mar – 446 (vel veeter)

CBR Database:
13,398 reviews
7,883 individual books reviewed
Most reviews: Malin (879), badkittyuno (836), narfna (674)

I have Goodreads data on 83% of reviews, sex info on 96.2% of authors, and the nationality on 78.1% of authors.

I’m still, of course, in the process of going back through CBR3, 4, and 5, along with various blogs for CBR1 and 2, not to mention the Pajiba reviews section of the mothership (though, I’ve only done a handful). I’ve s started tracking the number of “career” reviews for our long term regulars. Malin (with us since CBR2, if I’m not mistaken) is the all-time leader. I’m working my way through the long term Cannonballers,  so my all-time ranking isn’t close to comprehensive.

If anyone has suggestions for what else they want to see in the monthly stat round-up, just let me know. I’ve temporarily put the brakes on the Google Docs file for community edit.

I always love these but then I remember that I’m a bad reviewer and I’m still at review number 1.

You aren’t a bad reviewer for only doing one book, you are a great reviewer whose best writing lies in front of you.

    Yay I made it in!

The page average makes me feel a wee bit better about being behind my reading goal tracker on Goodreads.

Love that PattyKates did the book of Genesis.

Should I expand the monthly leaderboard? People really seem to like that.

I mean, naturally it’s an ego boost to see your name. But it’s already a lot of work for you, so I would never actively recommend more!

We’ll see. The round up is actually the easy part. It’s building the database that’s time consuming.

There are obviously some benefits to being part of this blogging thing for so long, just keeping at it, even though I’m going to be lucky if I finish in the top 10 of the leaderboard this year, with the terrifying speed at which everyone else seems to be reading and reviewing. I am really very happy discovering that I have the most reviews in total. Guess that decision to start reviewing EVERYTHING I read back in CBR3 is really paying off for me. :D

This year is eating away at me and my will to do anything at all, including reading and reviewing, so it’s nice to have a little boost from the stats.

I knew you’d be up there, but I had no idea you’d be tops, given how much badkitty has reviewed.

      Those extra years help.

What Malin said. Also, it makes me feel better that even though I’m slacking this year, I’m in the all time top three :)

Vel Veeter’s pace honestly frightens me. Do you sleep??

I think vel has decided to read all the things. She (right? I’m assuming vel is female) has almost surpassed my 2+ year total, and it’s only April.

Oh I stress read for sure. Sometimes I read too fast as well. And I am very very often listening to an audiobook during a lot of other parts of my day…chores, driving, getting read for work, sometimes at work. And the writing part works for me because it gives me an anchor to thinking through books as I read them, like I used to do when I was reading in college.

“Vel Veeter” is a joke name because our dog is named Velveeta.

I pretty much spend my work week (anywhere from ~44-60 hours a week) listening to audiobooks with the occasional podcast thrown in.

Though I do comparatively little reading outside of work.

I think I’m on books 27 and 28 right now. Just to put your output in perspective. It’s really quite remarkable.

I “found” audiobooks midway thru last year. Wouldn’t have double Cannonball ed without it

I can’t handle the spacing of many audiobooks…so luckily, Overdrive and Audible allow me to turn up the speed to 1.5. I can’t go back now. It does a good job of speeding up without changing pitch at all.

Oh drat, I think I just missed the cut-off :(

These round ups are such fun every month. I can’t believe we have over 13,000 reviews. Completely bonkers!

I’ll double check. I go through the list alphabetically, and my may have been broken after seeing vel veeters output.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve actually broken 20,000 reviews. Ive put almost no reviews from CBR1 or 2, and a fairly small number from 3. CBR4 and 5 are better represented, but i probably have fewer than 1,000 from either. Ive still got a lot of work ahead of me.

          LOL

And you are correct to think you should be included. You reviewed 10 books last month. I will make the appropriate corrections and requests for forgiveness.

I will admit that I was bummed missing the round up last month (9 read) and made it a goal to make it this time. I will totally credit Ingres if I hit 120 (10/ month) total
