pirates, sirens, and great banter

April 20, 2017 by Lane Leave a Comment

I fell in love with the idea of this book, the pirate king’s daughter purposely gets herself kidnapped in order to steal a map from rival pirates, and it really did not disappoint. It is a fun romp kind of book, with some decent romance thrown in.

The map is actually one-third of a map that will lead to an island where sirens have hidden an enormous treasure. Alosa’s father has asked her to get captured in order to search the ship of a rogue pirate crew that does not support the pirate king.

Alosa is the captain of her own ship, with an almost exclusively female crew. She is supernaturally strong, beautiful, smart, and funny. She doesn’t take crap from anyone. And she is never anyone’s victim, no matter what happens to her. She lives in a brutal world where rape and murder are everyday occurrences. She has scars from her father’s abuse. And she is locked away in a cell for a good part of this book. And yet it is all told with a light touch and Alosa is never afraid which makes the reader feel safe.

This is book is frothy fun. The world building felt a little thin. But there is terrific banter and chemistry between Alosa and her capture, and it is all very fast paced. It is the start of a series so hopefully we will see more of the world and Alosa’s crew in the next book.
